On page two you can see British preparations for future German air raids… Washington’s Grand Coulee Dam, now 99% complete, is way ahead of schedule (see page seven)… Page eight describes camp life in Iceland as U.S. soldiers arrive. Brig. Gen. John Marston’s 1st Provisional Marine Brigade have occupied the island since July but Army soldiers begin arriving in September…
On page 17 we read that a rescue crew is flying to Wyoming to assist George Hopkins, the stranded parachutist atop Devil’s Tower. As a backup plan, the Goodyear blimp Resolute is enroute from Ohio. The Navy will use Resolute (renamed L-4) during the war. Stay tuned for more on Hopkins.
Two more soldiers have perished in vehicle accidents during the Louisiana Maneuvers, raising the death toll to 97 (see page 18)… George Fielding Eliot’s column is on page 23, and H.G. Wells is again advocating ground combat against Germany… Page 28 discusses a prisoner exchange between the British and Germans… Blair Bolles discusses Coordinator of Information Col. William Donovan on page 30… At the bottom of page 30 we see the Marine paratroopers will not be outdone by their German counterparts, and have conducted a 40 mile cross-country march in 12 hours and 30 minutes… The war’s 109th week is summarized on page 32…
Sports section on page 40. Yesterday was Game 3 of the World Series, and for seven innings it was a pitcher’s duel between Fat Freddie Fitzsimmons of Brooklyn and the Yanks’ Marius Russo. Russo banged a line drive off Fitzsimmons for the last out of the seventh, which knocked the Dodgers’ pitcher out of the game. Hugh Casey took over the mound duties in the eighth and the Yankees capitalized. The Yankees are now up two games to one…
