The front page reports that several American-built B-17 bombers have been in combat with the Royal Air Force Bomber Command’s No. 90 Squadron since July 8. Meanwhile, the U.S. government has ordered mass production of Boeing’s B-17E. Designers have given the newest Forts a larger tail, copying the vertical stabilizer from the Boeing 307 Stratoliner (which itself is derived from the B-17). Gone are the teardrop-shaped windows for the side gunners, and on top is a traversing turret to better defend the bomber’s rear…
The British named their B-17Cs the Fortress I and have reached the conclusion that they are not a good fit for high-altitude daylight bombing missions against German targets. Eight RAF Forts have been lost already, either to combat or crashes, and the remainder are about to be transferred to Coastal Command… Two new cruisers are pictured on page two: USS Atlanta at Kearny, N.J. and USS San Juan at Quincy, Mass… There is a preview of the upcoming Louisiana Maneuvers on page six…
George Fielding Eliot discusses the Greer incident on page 19… Sports section is on page 34. In a showdown between two aces, Cincinnati’s Johnny Vander Meer got the best of the Cardinals’ Ernie White as Vander Meer strikes out 14 and shuts out the Cardinals. Just three years ago, Vander Meer threw two consecutive no-hitters, becoming the only player in baseball history to accomplish the feat. In fact, he was only the fourth pitcher to have thrown two no-hitters in baseball history… In case you wondered how baseball teams traveled in 1941, both the Braves and the Phillies are mentioned riding the same train to New York on page 35. Philadelphia’s manager Hans Lobert points out that even on trains his ballclub (which is a perennial cellar-dweller) is in last place when he finds their car is at the end of the line… Blair Bolles summarizes the war’s 105th week (page 42)
