Don Scott, two-time All-American quarterback at Ohio State, has died in a B-26 Marauder crash in England. Scott played high school ball at Canton McKinley (Ohio), the rival of Massillon Washington High School — then coached by the legendary Paul Brown. While at McKinley, Scott’s team beat Massillon three out of four years. The Chicago Bears chose Scott as the ninth overall pick of the 1941 NFL Draft, but having earned his pilot wings while in college, he took a commission in the Army Air Corps in March…

Page six features yet another warning from Washington that Americans shouldn’t get overly excited about all the recent Allied successes. Navy Secretary Frank Knox is the one tempering expectations this time… George Fielding Eliot column on page eight… Sports on page 12, and the Cardinals will be starting lefty Max Lanier in Game One of the World Series tomorrow against the New York Yankees…

Backup catcher Angelo (Tony) Giuliani is also mentioned on page 12. Although he played parts of seven seasons for the Browns, Dodgers, and Nationals, he was on the field for both Joe DiMaggio’s first major league game and when Lou Gehrig gave his farewell speech. Giuliani was part of Friday’s triple play against the Tigers

A 19-year-old waist gunner with 30 bombing missions under his belt is headed back to the states — to become a pilot himself (see page 21)…
