On today’s front page: American soldiers used bayonet charges to take the strategically important Hill 609 (Djebel Tahent) from its German defenders in Northern Tunisia. This is a major victory for U.S. troops, and although the writer names Lt. Gen. George Patton as the commanding general, Maj. Gen. Omar Bradley is actually leading II Corps now, and the job fell to soldiers in Maj. Gen. Terry Allen’s 34th Division.

Part of the force that drove the Germans off of Djebel Tahent came from Col. John W. “Iron Mike” O’Daniel’s old 168th Infantry. O’Daniel was promoted to brigadier general in December and Lt. Gen. Mark Clark made Iron Mike chief of Fifth Army’s Invasion Training Center. Clark was his company commander during World War I, and O’Daniel took over the company once Clark was promoted to battalion commander…
