With 150 fatalities so far, Boston’s Cocoanut Grove nightclub will become the second-deadliest building fire in U.S. history. 492 people ultimately perish from the blaze which could have been prevented had the club not been using flammable gas for air conditioning system, had exit doors locked, and been filled to twice its normal capacity… George Fielding Eliot column on page 15…
Page 33 features an opinion piece claiming that Native Americans are the “best soldiers in the Army…” 169th week of the war summarized on page 35… The sports section begins on page 41, which reports that the Naval Academy has upset West Point 14-0. Pictured is Harold Hamberg, a former football star at the University of Arkansas before receiving an appointment to Annapolis. Hamberg is named second-team All-American in 1943 and also plays baseball and is captain of the track team. He serves on cruisers during the war then gets his aviator wings and flies Super Constellations during the Korean War. He will return to Annapolis to coach football and retires as a captain after 29 years and passes away in 2018…
13-year Major League veteran pitcher Pete Appleton has joined the Navy as a lieutenant junior grade. Appleton spends the war as a baseball coach… District Area Fighting Men on page 83
