Sports section begins on page 37. Bob Feller, pitching for the Norfolk Naval Training Station, shut out the Quantico Marine ball club and struck out 13 batters in six innings of work. But Quantico pitcher — and former minor leaguer — Gordon Bradshaw also shut out Norfolk. Babe Ruth was one of the game’s umpires… On page 38: the Camp Wheeler Spokes are eligible for the national semipro baseball championship thanks to former Washington Nationals slugger Cecil Travis’ hitting in the Georgia state championship. Meanwhile, the Pittsburgh Pirates will host tryouts for colored ballplayers. Commissioner Kennesaw Mountain Landis recently said there is no rule or gentleman’s agreement barring black players from joining the major leagues.
