On Independence Day, Americans woke up to the news that the Army Air Force conducted its first raid on German targets. Six 15th Bombardment Squadron crews, flying Douglas DB-7 Bostons hit Luftwaffe airfields in the Netherlands on a joint strike with Royal Air Force Bomber Command aircrews (story on front page)…

Below the fold is the story of an airman who spent two days at sea dodging Japanese strafing attacks then spent 18 days wandering naked through New Guinea before reaching safety…

On page two, the destroyer USS Shaw, which the Japanese believed had been destroyed during the attack on Pearl Harbor, is back in service. Also pictured is Pilot Officer Jerrold Alpine Smith, the Royal Canadian Air Force officer who landed a Spitfire on the American flattop USS Wasp during the ferry operation to Malta. The 21-year-old pilot that landed without a tailhook and only had 15 feet of deck remaining once he came to a stop will perish in August on Malta…
