George Fielding Eliot column on page four… Summary of the war’s 115th week on page 36… An article on the Army’s “Grasshopper Squadrons” of Piper Cubs on page 39… Sports section begins on page 44. On page 46, the Minnesota Golden Gophers traveled to Iowa City to defend their 15-game unbeaten streak. In fact, the last time coach Bernie Bierman lost was to Nile Kinnick and the “Ironman” Hawkeyes at Iowa Stadium two years ago. After playing Minnesota to a 13-13 tie in the first half, it was a “power parade” in the second.
Mentioned are: “Bus” Mertes, who moves across campus next season to play for Bierman’s Iowa Pre-Flight squad. After the war he plays two seasons in the NFL and four in the All-America Football Conference… Al Couppee was quarterback on the Hawks’ 1939 team and played for the Washington Redskins in 1946, then became an announcer for the Hawkeyes’ football and basketball teams. He later moved to San Diego where he was the voice of the Chargers and Padres… Center Bill Diehl and fullback Bill Green are drafted with Couppee in the 1942 NFL Draft, but do not play.
The Cleveland Rams select quarterback Tom Farmer in the second round of the 1943 Draft. After serving in the Marine Corps he joins the Rams in Los Angeles, then plays two seasons with Washington… Cleveland takes left end Bill Parker in the eighth round, but he never plays pro ball… Neither does right end Bill Burkett, who is picked by the Brooklyn Dodgers.
