Page 4 mentions an American volunteer for the Royal Air Force writing home to deny reports he had died. Edward E. Streets volunteered for service with the RAF and was stationed in Scotland before shipping out to Malta, where he will be killed during an enemy bombing raid in 1942. The Veterans of Foreign War post in his hometown Easton, Md. is named in Streets’ honor… Sports section is on page 25… Two members of UCLA’s “Gold Dust Trio” are mentioned in the Washington Redskins’ exhibition game against the Pacific Coast All-Stars: UCLA’s Woody Strode and Kenny Washington (see page 26). The “Trio” member escaping mention is Jackie Robinson. Washington will break the NFL’s color barrier in 1946, signing with the Los Angeles Rams and is joined that season by Strode. The next year, Robinson — formerly a platoon leader in the 761st “Black Panther” Tank Battalion– suits up for the Brooklyn Dodgers.
