Sports section is on page 12… The two Soviet generals pictured on the front page — Maj. Gen. Nikolai Kuzmich Kirillov (XIII Rifle Corps) and Maj. Gen. Pavel Grigoryevich Ponedelin (12th Army) — will survive the war as German prisoners-of-war, only to be imprisoned by Josef Stalin and executed on August 25, 1950 for surrendering earlier in the month. The Germans captured two Soviet army commanders during the Battle of Uman, as well as four corps commanders, and 11 division commanders.
