1779: Gen. George Washington’s army establishes their winter headquarters at Morristown, N.J. during the worst winter of the 1700s. 1918:

1804: Marine Corps 1st Lt. Presley O’Bannon, William Eaton, Navy Midshipman George Mann, and seven Marines land at Alexandria, Egypt

1864: Lt. Gen. James Longstreet’s forces assault Union-held Fort Sanders. The defenders are well prepared: telegraph wire is strung up

1817: The First Seminole War begins when Gen. (and future president) Andrew Jackson leads forces into Spanish-held Florida to reclaim
