William M. Quint Silver Star citation
The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the SILVER STAR MEDAL to
CORPORAL WILLIAM M. QUINT,
UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS RESERVE,
for service as set forth in the following
CITATION:
“For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as an Acting Platoon Sergeant of Company G, Third Battalion, Twenty-eight Marines, Fifth Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces during the assault on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, 18 March 1945. Participating in an attack on a strongly entrenched enemy force, Corporal Quint reached the objective with a small group of men and, holding his ground, engaged the Japanese until the rest of his platoon could reach him. Although painfully wounded twice during this action, he refused to be evacuated and, remaining in command of his platoon, directed his men into position and successfully evacuated the wounded. Only then did he permit himself to be evacuated. His outstanding courage and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.”
For the president,
/s/ John L. Sullivan
Secretary of the Navy.
