TO
PRIVATE FIRST CLASS GORDON A. HENDRICKSON

CITATION:

Private First Class Gordon A. Hendrickson, 37581785, (then Private) Infantry, Company “H”, 409th Infantry Regiment. For heroism in action. During the daylight hours of 3 December 1944, in the vicinity of * * * , France, an adjacent company was forced to withdraw from their positions when the enemy counter-attacked with self-propelled artillery and armored vehicles. With utter disregard for his life, Private Hendrickson, a gunner, courageously and single-handedly carried his machine gun through a hail of small arms and self-propelled artillery fire to an exposed position. Private Hendrickson poured a stream of fire into the surprised enemy and temporarily halted the hostile counter-attack until the other machine guns could be placed in position and completely repulse the attacking enemy. As a result of Private Hendrickson’s magnificent valor, a hostile counter-attack was halted and an effective defense was formed while preparations were made to continue our advance. Residence: Bejou, Minnesota.
