CITATION:

Private First Class Walter E. Davis, 13135197, Infantry, Company “E”, 409th Infantry Regiment. For heroism in action. On 14 November 1944, in the vicinity of * * * , France, Private Davis, a mortarman, on his own initiative worked unceasingly throughout the day and night to help evacuate wounded men over the wooded and mountainous terrain. With utter disregard for his life, he served as a litter bearer carrying at least eight casualties through the rain over difficult mountain trails. Although tired and exhausted he exposed himself to enemy artillery and sniper fire to carry a wounded comrade on his back for three miles. As a result of his magnificent valor and spirit of duty, the lives of many comrades were saved. Residence: Corry, Pennsylvania.
