Silent Majority: Silent No Longer
A letter to the editor of my local paper
The City Council of Berkeley, California told the Marines that they are “uninvited and unwelcome intruders.” They also tacitly supported the defacement of the recruiting station. The mayor of Toledo, Ohio ordered Marines to leave town because they “frighten people.” In Olympia, Washington, protesters sabotaged railroad tracks and nearly shut down the port in order to stop shipments of an Army brigade returning from Iraq. The local and state government stood by while the demonstration lasted for over two weeks. Protesters in Portland, Oregon burned a US soldier in effigy. Officials barred Marines returning from Iraq from the terminal at the Oakland International Airport.
Now, is this the message that we want to send to our troops, that America does not want you? Nearly four thousand of America’s best and brightest, including our own heroes SSgt. Bradley Skelton, Cpl. Jeremy Shank, and Sgt. Robert Davis, gave everything so we could have everything. They deserve far better.
Folks, we are the Heartland of America. Let’s show these radicals that we will be the ‘silent majority’ no longer. Let’s send a message — loud and clear — that we love our troops and honor their sacrifice. City councils, mayors, and city managers of the Heartland: why not counter the wayward behavior of those government officials with some positive actions of our own?
A nation that will not honor our veterans does not deserve them. God Bless our troops and God Bless the United States of America.
