Legendary Gas House Gang member Dizzy Dean has appeared in his last game¹Ok, Dean does pitch one more game for the St. Louis Browns in 1947 after the broadcaster says that he is better than most of the Browns’ pitching staff. He starts the last game of the season and shut out the White Sox in four innings of work. He might have gone further, but he pulled a hamstring after hitting a single in his only at-bat.. He strikes out one Pirate but allows two triples and three runs, getting the hook after one inning of work. His playing days are over but he isn’t done with baseball. Stay tuned for more on Dean…

President Roosevelt has compared anti-interventionist Charles Lindbergh to the Civil War’s “Copperheads” — story begins on page two. Meanwhile a German paper says that Lindbergh’s opposition to America entering the European war is out of love for his country (page 18). We shall soon see who was right…

Korvettenkapitän Otto Kretschmer, the skipper whose U-boat sunk 47 ships, totaling 274,418 tons, is pictured on page six. Germany’s top U-boat ace was captured last month after depth charges crippled his boat. Although he spends the remainder of the war as a prisoner, Kretschmer will remain the top U-boat ace… Sports section begins on page 46.
