The Italians have surrendered Pantelleria and remaining pockets of Japanese on Attu are being mopped up… On page five, the American defense industry is turning out over 7,000 warplanes in May and plan to top 8,000 for June… On page 10, George Fielding Eliot says we are on the road to victory. He suggests that the Japanese might be wise to invade Siberia to draw Soviet attention from Europe. Now Japan surely doesn’t give much care to the well-being of Nazi Germany, but they need the Allies to fight Hitler as long as possible, because victory in Europe means all the focus will shift to the Pacific…
Air crews are praising the B-26 Marauder medium bomber on page 15… Sports begins on page 16 mentions several service baseball teams. Mickey Cochrane pinch-hit for his Great Lakes Navy Bluejackets in the ninth inning and drove in two runs, but Great Lakes fell to the Cincinnati Reds, killing their 13-game winning streak. Former White Sox pitcher Len Perme and his Navy Pier team lost 4-3 to a semipro club, ending their 12-game streak. Hard-charging former Red Sox outfielder Andy Gilbert is now in the Army Air Force and playing for Geiger Field (Spokane, Wash.).
