First-hand accounts of the North African landings on page six… Sports section begins on page 18… Page 31 features a story of a planeload of wounded Guadalcanal Marines surviving 10 days at sea on a single fish. Lt. Col. Randolph McCall Pate is among the shipwrecked men. Pate enlisted in the Army in 1918 before entering the Virginia Military Institute and accepting a commission in the Marine Corps. He participated in the Guadalcanal, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa campaigns and took over as commanding general of the 1st Marine Division just before the armistice during the Korean War
