The front page reports that Germans forces are taking heavy casualties on the island of Corsica. A thousand Axis troops lay dead on the battlefield, killed by Germany’s former allies — the French and Italians. If retaken, Corsica will become the first French territory to be recovered from the Axis. George Fielding Eliot discusses the situation on page 10…
You might not know Zeke Bonura, but he was one of the league’s most popular first basemen in the 1930s. He is a corporal in the Army now, but he averaged 100 runs batted in a season, and retired with a .307 batting average. “Zeke” is short for “Physique,” a nickname he earned in high school where he set an American record on the javelin throw. He is pictured on page 18 surrounded by Army nurses on Africa. He is about to be presented with the Legion of Merit for leading the effort to build ball diamonds across the theater…
