The front page references an Army and Navy Journal piece1See Army and Navy Journal Volume 81 Issue 3 (Sept. 18, 1943) which states that “powerful interests” want Army Chief of Staff Gen. George C. Marshall assigned to a theater command and out of Washington. While it would be very interesting to see who the editorialist is alluding to, the piece doesn’t go into any detail. As we close in on Germany and Japan, the requirements for planes are evolving. Originally we needed big bombers with long range. Now that we have achieved a foothold on Europe, the front page mentions that we are considering heavy bombers with short range. Trips are becoming shorter, so loading less fuel means more capacity to carry bombs. I had hoped that investigating what planes we could be developing would lead to a new and interesting platform I had never heard of before, but sadly it just looks like designers would just be adding more racks…
Sports on page 26, and the St. Louis Cardinals have clinched the National League pennant… Josh Gibson and the Homestead Greys are waiting to see who they will face in the Negro League World Series that begins on Tuesday (see page 27). The Chicago American Giants are up two games to one over the Birmingham Black Barons in the playoff series… This week in the war summarized on page 38…
