A week Fifth Army landed at Salerno, Fifth Army commanding general Lt. Gen. Mark Clark’s order of the day is published on page one. In part it reads, “We have arrived at our initial objective — our beachhead is secure. Additional troops are landing every day and we are here to stay. Not one foot of ground will be given up.” Looking at the map below, the entire landing area is surrounded by mountains, which the Germans have bristling with guns that can easily bring the invading troops under fire…

George Fielding Eliot column on page 10… Sports on page 18, and former Brooklyn Dodgers relief pitcher Hugh Casey — now pitching for the Norfolk Air Station is mentioned having won a game against Norfolk Training Station in the Navy’s “World Series.” His opponent was Tom Earley, who played five seasons with the Boston Braves. Although saves won’t be an official statistic until 1969, Casey led the league last year with 13. Here are the two pitchers’ careers compared in baseball card format:
