World War II Chronicle: September 12, 1943

Last week German and Italian soldiers fought alongside each other. Now they are reportedly killing each other in Italy (see front page)… Benson Ford, the grandson of Henry Ford, is mentioned on page six. His father Edsel had been running Ford Motor Co., and passed away from cancer in May 1943. Henry took the company back over and will hand the reigns over to Henry Ford II. But back to Benson: although blind in his left eye, he convinces the Army to allow him to enlist. He then attends officers candidate school. His brother Henry Ford II left the Navy to help manage the company, and will take over from his grandfather after the war.

Henry II is responsible for hiring the “Brain Trust,” a group of ten former Army Air Force statisticians that includes Lt. Col. — and future Secretary of Defense — Robert S. McNamara. McNamara will also succeed Henry II as president of Ford… George Fielding Eliot column on page eight…

Sports on page 26, and Major League Baseball has determined that this year’s World Series will feature three games in New York followed by four games in St. Louis instead of the traditional two here, three there, and two here format which requires teams to travel twice as much… Speaking of the Cardinals, Stan “The Man” Musial is featured on page 27, discussing how an arm injury knocked him off the pitching mound and led to discovering that he could be one of baseball’s premier batters…

America’s 92nd week of the war discussed on page 42… Famed scientist Albert Einstein is pictured on page 80, with the caption stating he is working for the Naval Bureau of Ordnance…
