The U.S. Seventh Army and the British Eighth Army have invaded Sicily. 45-m.p.h. winds played havoc on airborne forces, scattering paratroopers of the 82nd Airborne during their first combat jump. Col. James M. Gavin, commander of the 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, was the fist one out the door. Gavin becomes known as the “Jumping General,” this being his first of four combat jumps during the war. American task force is commanded by Lt. Gen. George Patton…
Also on the front page: St. Louis Cardinals starting pitcher Howie Pollett will report to the Army Air Force for training as an aviation cadet… Pictured on page three is Winston Churchill and his daughter Mary, an anti-aircraft gun crew member in the Auxiliary Territorial Service. Winston’s eldest daughter Diana is an officer in the Women’s Royal Naval Service. We discussed his other daughter Sarah in a previous post. Son Randolph was commissioned an officer in his father’s old unit, the 4th Queen’s Own Hussars, but later joined the Special Air Service…
