Col. Elliot Roosevelt shares what the life of a reconnaissance pilot is like on page five, which also announces the birth of modern body armor. All bomber crews in the Eighth Air Force will begin wearing armored vests. The article mentions that the plates are made by an 18th Century British swordmaker, that perhaps could have furnished blades used by the Redcoats during the Revolutionary War. 12-year-old private first class James P. Baker has been discharged from the Marine Corps. I’ve seen boys that can pass for being older than they are, but how on earth did he pull it off? Baker must have made quite the impression because the commanding officer of Camp Pendleton told Baker he’d “move heaven and earth” to get him back — once he turned 17…
Sports begins on page 12. Although the NFL lost a team this year and two clubs merged, professional football is looking to expand next season by adding a franchise in Boston. Other possibilities are Buffalo, Baltimore, and Los Angeles.
