While his medal was presented last year, we learn today that Lt. Col. James Roosevelt, second-in-command of the 2nd Marine Raider Battalion, earned the Navy Cross for valor on Makin Island. His citation is published in full on page three… Former All-American tackle and West Point football coach Laverne G. Saunders, a newly promoted Army Air Force brigadier general, tells his experience on the ground of a day and night of constant Japanese aerial bombardment on Guadalcanal (see page four). More on the five missing Sullivan brothers from Waterloo, Iowa on page four… In Sunday’s Chronicle we discussed France’s new Escadrille La Fayette and their commanding officer Maj. Constantin “Kostia” Rozanoff is highlighted in today’s paper.
Eddie Rickenbacker’s copilot continues his story on page eight… Former heavyweight boxer “Sonny Boy” Walker is now a Marine officer fighting on Guadalcanal. Walker enlisted in 1941 and earned a field commission…George Fielding Eliot column on page 12… Sports page begins on page 20, featuring Yankees pitcher Red Ruffing, now pitching tents for the Army. The 38-year-old Ruffing has spent 19 seasons in the big leagues and has made the last five All-Star teams… Columbia’s “Pitchin’ Paul” Governali has received the Maxwell Award for being the best college football player of the season…… On the same page, the NFL’s 1942 All-Pro team is announced, and the New York Giants announced they will be training at the former estate of John D. Rockefeller and they will make the two-mile trip to the playing field by horse-drawn carriages.
