Yankee center fielder Joe DiMaggio, who is getting a divorce in Reno, is hinting at a possible retirement from baseball (see page two)… Brooklyn Dodgers relief pitcher Hugh “Fireman” Casey is reportedly about to enter the Coast Guard. In fact he joins the Navy, serving as a physical trainer at Naval Air Station Norfolk and later ships out to Hawaii… Future commandant of the Special Warfare School William Yarborough is pictured on page five interrogating German prisoners in Tunisia. Yarborough was executive officer of the Paratroop Task Force during the Operation TORCH landings and is about to be named commanding officer of 2nd Battalion, 509th Parachute Infantry Regiment…

George Fielding Eliot column on page six… The submarine USS Nautilus has extracted 29 refugees — mostly women — from under the Japanese noses on Bougainville. Story on page seven — details here… Sports section begins on page 12…

You won’t find this in the papers, but the Navy has recorded its first kill with the Mk. 32 proximity fuse. In fact, USS Helena gunners kill a Aichi Type 99 “Val” carrier bomber in their first salvo. Anti-aircraft artillery has taken a huge leap forward, as American gunners no longer need to directly hit an enemy aircraft to kill it. They only need to be close.
