A bulletin on the front page announces that more than half of the 1,816 British and Commonwealth prisoners of war aboard a Japanese transport went down with the ship when it was sunk at the beginning of October. In fact, it is the hell ship Lisbon Maru, which was not marked as carrying POWs and was attacked by the U.S. submarine USS Grouper. Japanese guards secure the sinking ship’s hatches after the torpedo hits, condemning the prisoners inside. Those who manage to escape are shot, either by guards aboard the ship or are machine-gunned by nearby Japanese vessels if they made it to the water. Three guards are killed and 826 POWs, many of which were captured on Hong Kong…
