Navy has upset Army 14-0 (see front page)…. Page three reports that the Downtown Athletic Club has awarded Frank Sinkwich this year’s Heisman Trophy. The Georgia halfback finished second to Minnesota’s Bruce Smith last season. He ran for 828 yards, scored 17 touchdowns while passing 1,456 yards adding nine more TDs. Born in Croatia, he joins the Marine Corps after graduation, but his flat feet keep him out of the service and he is the first overall pick of the 1942 NFL draft…
The “Guadalcanal hero” mentioned on page four is Lt. (j.g.) Francis R. Register. His earned his first Distinguished Flying Cross on Oct. 1 and was personally decorated by Adm. Chester Nimitz. He shoots down a total of seven enemy aircraft, but perishes during the Aleutian Campaign in May 1943… George Fielding Eliot discusses what the scuttling of the French fleet means for Allied sea power on page 11… A war correspondent tells how the Japanese Guadalcanal task force was defeated with “God’s help” on page 13…
