An Orwellian-sounding piece on today’s front page reports that government officials will be checking the 15,000 attendants of Saturday’s Army-Navy game to make sure they haven’t violated any rationing or attendance rules. Only Annapolis-area locals are allowed to attend. Transportation has been squeezed to the point that pre-flight service schools will not be attending college football bowl games this year…
Pat Mullin, former Detroit Tigers centerfielder, has been promoted to sergeant (see page three). He plays for the Army’s New Cumberland (Pa.) Reception Center and is a two-time All Star after the war… George Fielding Eliot column on page eight… Sports begins on page 14… The Red Army has all but surrounded the German Sixth Army at Stalingrad — see the map on page 16…
