The Allied invasion of French North Africa is proceeding, better on some fronts than others. Fighting is heaviest at Casablanca, where the United States Navy is pounding the Vichy French fleet… “Little” Ben Hogan, who has already won 16 PGA Tour events, is putting his clubs away and becoming a pilot (see page three). Hogan initially serves as an Army Air Force physical trainer but becomes an instructor pilot. The legendary Bobby Jones asks for a commission after the 1942 Masters and serves as an Army Air Force intelligence officer, landing at Normandy on June 7.

Lloyd Mangrum, with five titles under his belt, served in Patton’s Third Army and was wounded at Normandy and the Battle of the Bulge. Mangrum earned two Silver Stars and two Bronze Stars before returning to golf an winning the U.S. Open in 1946. Reigning 1942 PGA champion Sam Snead served in the Navy… The commanders of Operation TORCH are profiled on page seven… Another story about Gen. George Patton on page eight…

All five Cetrulo brothers from Newark, N.J. are now serving in the U.S. Armed Forces (see page nine). Dean serves in the Eighth Air Force and is shot down while on a mission over Italy. Captured and imprisoned, he makes a daring escape and his ability to speak Italian helps him reach friendly lines while his brother Guido searched for him. Dean wins Bronze in Fencing during the 1948 Olympics in London. He is kept out of the 1952 Olympics based on accusations that was paid to give Hollywood’s Errol Flynn fencing lessons…

George Fielding Eliot column on page 13… The “Philippine Escape” story continues on page 15… Sports section begins on page 17, and St. Louis Cardinals rookie pitching sensation Johnny Beazley says he is through with baseball and plans on making a career out of the Army…
