Page two features a story about a bombing raid targeting German U-boat pens in Lorient, France where three of our bombers were lost. On one of those B-17s is 2nd Lt. Ewart T. Sconiers, who climbed into the cockpit and flew his bomber home when enemy fire killed the copilot and incapacitated the pilot. The entire crew bailed out safely but were picked up by a French fishing vessel who handed the airmen over to the Germans. Sconiers was sent to Stalag Luft III in Zagan, Poland. He developed an infection after falling on the ice, which turned into an infection and ultimately took his life in January 1944. His remains were identified in 2016 and repatriated…
