Page three reports that “Jock” Sutherland, the Brooklyn Dodgers football coach, has accepted a lieutenant commander’s commission in the U.S. Navy. Sutherland was an All-American end for “Pop” Warner’s University of Pittsburgh (Pitt) squad and also played for the Ohio League’s Massillon Tigers in 1919, which would become the National Football League in 1920. The native-born Scotsman compiled a collegiate record over 20 seasons of 144-28-14 and led Pitt to a national championship in 1937. He coached four seasons in the NFL, earning a 28-14-1 record and was elected to the collegiate hall of fame in 1951…
On page five: Jimmy Stewart, now stationed at Mather Field (Sacramento, Calif.), has been promoted to first lieutenant. He became second lieutenant on January 1 and has been working on films and radio programs for Uncle Sam. Soon the movie star will secure a combat assignment… 28 airmen are being awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for their role in the Battle of Midway, including crews that participated in the first-ever torpedo attack by the Army (see page eight)…
