Page two features a story about a fatal plane crash that came close to taking out Adm. Chester Nimitz. On June 30 a Sikorsky XPBS-1 carrying the Commander-in-Chief of the Pacific Fleet to a command conference had just landed off Naval Air Station Alameda when it struck a submerged log and flipped over. The copilot, Lt. Thomas M. Roscoe (pictured on the front page) was killed and Adm. Nimitz was injured. Nimitz remained on top of the plane and directed rescue efforts.
Also on page two, 12 sailors jumped overboard from life rafts to make room for the wounded when the tanker USS Neosho was sunk in May.
