Field Marshall Erwin Rommell is pictured on page two, and recently assassinated Reinhard Heydrich is seen on page six. Heydrich, perhaps the darkest figure in the Nazi regime, was recently killed by British-trained Checkoslovak agents in Prague…

Sports section begins on page 16, which features Paul Waner’s 3,000th hit. Technically, “Big Poison” reached the landmark on Jun 17 against Cincinnati. Shortstop Eddie Joost couldn’t cleanly handle the grounder after snatching it and had no chance on throwing Waner out. Waner protested to the official scorekeeper that he wanted his 3,000th to be a clean hit and it was changed to an error. Yesterday’s landmark came against the Pirates, the team that Waner and his brother played for for nearly two decades. The umpire stopped the action after the future Hall of Fame outfielder reached first so the fans and his current and former teammates could honor the first player to join 3,000 Hit Club since 1925.

Other members: Cap Anson (1897), Honus Wagner (1914), Nap Lajoie (1914), Ty Cobb (1921), Tris Speaker (1925), and Eddie Collins (1925). The Club’s next member is a rookie with the St. Louis Cardinals and needs 2,931 more hits.
