Captain Hewitt T. Wheless is mentioned on the front page, having just visited the White House. President Roosevelt referred to the B-17 pilot last month in one of the president’s fireside chats, stating that a week after Pearl Harbor, Wheless’ bomber was jumped by 18 Japanese fighters, wounding three gunners and killing a fourth. Despite the furball, the crew managed to drop their bombs and Wheless safely brought his plane home and landed despite three flat tires…Sports on page 25…
Page 33 mentions the new Cecil B. DeMille movie Reap the Wild Wind. Since beginning the World War II Chronicle I’ve seen several period films, none of which were bad. But I have to say that Reap the Wild Wind is the best movie I’ve seen in a long time. The special effects were surprisingly realistic and the characters were great. I won’t spoil any surprises, but I will say that the plot twists were excellent. Honestly, I think I will buy this movie and watch it again.
King Cutler is played by Raymond Massey, whose father was the “Massey” in Massey-Harris Limited, which made tractors and now goes by Massey-Ferguson. Raymond was a Canadian artillery officer and fought on the Western Front during World War I. After he was wounded he became a military instructor at Yale University, but was later sent to Russia as part of Canada’s Siberian Expeditionary Force. Robert Preston plays King’s brother Dan. Preston is headed for the Army Air Force and will serve as an intelligence officer for the Ninth Air Force.
