The war’s 133rd week is summarized on page 28… Construction on the Pentagon began six months ago — Sept. 11, 1941 — see the picture on page 29… The sports section begins on page 36, and Pvt. Joe Louis is training for his first boxing match since joining the Army. On Saturday Louis faces Abe Simon at the Madison Square Garden. The two faced off on March 21, 1941, resulting in a technical knockout for Louis when the referee called the fight in the 13th round.

Page 37 reports that Cmdr. John Whelchel starts his first season as head coach for the Naval Academy football team. Whelchel (Class of ’19) became a coach after graduating from Annapolis, and will lead the Midshipmen until 1945 when he moves on to command the heavy cruiser USS San Francisco in the Pacific Theater. After the war he coaches the Washington Redskins for the 1949 season.
