The ranking officer on Bataan, Maj. Gen. Jonathan Wainwright, has been promoted (front page), MacArthur promises to return to the Philippines to relieve his forces, while details emerge from his journey to Australia (page two)… On page four, Adolf Hitler is summoning his top commanders to plan a new offensive on the Eastern Front…
On page eight the Army honored a Navy submarine crew for a daring, secret mission. The sub was in fact USS Trout, which evacuated some 20 tons of gold, silver, torpedoes, and other valuable cargo from the Philippines. Her skipper’s Distinguished Service Cross citation is here… On the same page is a story about a hotel clerk who will spend the next two years in prison for speaking critically of the president, the Constitution, and the Bible. Had Mr. Ginsberg waited a few years to spout off, he would sound like most anyone in the media or the Democrat Party…
