Former light heavyweight champion Billy Conn is pictured during processing for entry in the U.S. Armed Forces (page 3)… War Department communique 137 on page 4… The Flying Tigers are withdrawing from Burma, but they bag some 43 enemy warplanes before departing (page 6)…
Stanley B. Caplan, an ensign with just eight month’s experience who got the destroyer USS Aylwin underway during the attack on Pearl Harbor despite only having 50% of the crew aboard and just four officers, is commended on page 6… Page 13 reports the great-grandsons of West Virginia’s famous Hatfields and McCoys have both joined the Marine Corps… Sports section begins on page 46… On the following page Ted Williams announces that he will join the Navy after the 1942 baseball season. Pictured on page 48 is massive Navy lineman and shotputter Eugene R. Flathmann, who after graduating from Annapolis (Class of ’42) serves 19 months of combat duty in the Marine Corps.
