Gen Douglas MacArthur has awarded Maj. Thomas J.H. Trapnell with the Distinguished Service Cross for extraordinary valor on the Philippines. “Trap” was an All-American back during his football career at West Point (Class of ’27) as well as captain of the lacrosse team. He is ultimately captured by the Japanese and survives the war, becoming the 187th Regimental Combat Team’s commander during the Korean War, and leads the American advisory group to French Indochina before the siege at Dien Bien Phu. He returned to South Vietnam in 1961 as an adviser to Pres. John F. Kennedy, determining there was no winnable military strategy against the Communists. Returning to the United States, he commanded Third Army before retiring as a lieutenant general in 1962…
