The front page reports that the Army has given Durham, N.C. permission to host this year’s Rose Bowl between Duke and Oregon State… On page two Lt. George Welch tells reporters about the fighting above Oahu on Dec. 7… Silhouettes of Japanese warplanes are found on page four, as is a story about the Japanese mini-sub captured during the attack on Pearl Harbor (pictures on page six). And the Navy has announced that so far they have counted 2,897 killed in action on Oahu in the surprise Japanese attack…

Also on page six is a brief story that has become somewhat of a legend about the defenders of Wake Island. When Hawaii radioed the garrison asking what they needed after defeating the initial assault by the Japanese invasion fleet on Dec. 11, the response was “Send us more Japs!” To confuse Japanese code breakers, “Send us” and “more Japs” was added to the beginning and end of the message, but “None of us was that much of a damn fool,” James Devereaux (commanding officer of the 1st Defense Battalion) said after the war, “We already had more Japs than we could handle…”

George Fielding Eliot column on page 11… Sports section begins on page 17, which details what cities are in the running to host college football’s other bowl games.
