Adm. Chester W. Nimitz pins the Navy Cross on Doris Miller on board USS Enterprise (CV-6), 27 May 1942 for exceptional courage during the Pearl Harbor attack on 7 December 1941. Miller carried his mortally wounded skipper to a position of safety then manned a machinegun he had no previous training to defend his ship against attacking enemy planes.
