Gen. John J. Pershing awards McNair with the Distinguished Service Medal

Lt. Gen. Leslie J. McNair, chief of staff of the Army’s General Headquarters, is off to North Carolina to direct the upcoming Carolina Maneuvers. McNair was selected as an alternate for the U.S. Naval Academy after graduating high school in 1897, but grew tired of waiting for his number to be called and secured an appointment to West Point instead. He graduated 11th in the Class of 1904 and was commissioned a second lieutenant for a mountain artillery unit stationed at Fort Douglas, Utah. He served during the Veracruz Campaign and the Pancho Villa Expedition with the 4th Field Artillery Regiment. During the First World War he was chief of staff of artillery training and tactics for the Allied Expeditionary Force…
