Sports section begins on page 16… The submarine tender USS Holland, accompanied by submarines Swordfish, Salmon, Sturgeon, and Skipjack depart Pearl Harbor for Manila, where they will reinforce the Asiatic Fleet’s Submarine Force. The subs are carrying warheads for their torpedoes, due to deteriorating U.S.-Japanese relations.
Two teams were tied for number 1 going into Saturday: Texas faced Southern Methodist (20) and Minnesota faced off against Northwestern (9). Bernie Bierman’s squad barely held off Northwestern, 8-7 while the Longhorns shut out the Mustangs 34-0. Having outscored their opponents 234-27 in the past two weeks, Dana Bible’s high-powered offense has put Texas in sole possession of first place.
Coach Bible’s teams are known for annihilating his opponents: in 1917, his first year with Texas A&M, the Aggies had a perfect season, going 10-0 and outscoring opponents 270-0. Bible was with the American Expeditionary Force for the 1918 season, but he returned to lead Texas to another undefeated campaign in 1919 — scoring 275 points while shutting out all of their opponents again.
