Pictured is “Robby” Olds, offensive and defenseive tackle for West Point. You will recognize him as Robin Olds, the legendary fighter pilot and triple ace. Next season Grantland Rice names Olds “Player of the Year” and he is selected for the All-American team.
While he was elected captain for the 1943 season, West Point began an abbreviated class schedule and Olds graduated in June 1943. Gen. Henry H. “Hap” Arnold personally pinned Olds’ wings on, as Arnold was there to see his second son graduate from West Point. Olds was enshrined in the National College Football Hall of Fame in 1985… A medical condition kept Arnold’s son David from earning his wings, but he earned a field artillery commission and fought at Okinawa and occupation duty in Korea. Before attending West Point, David served in the horse cavalry under then-colonel George S. Patton Jr.
Hap Arnold’s oldest son, Henry Jr. (Class of ’39) had already graduated West Point and youngest son David graduated in 1949. All became colonels.
