George Fielding Eliot column on page 13… Sports section begins on page 46. In an article about Notre Dame’s schedule, Iowa Hawkeyes coach Eddie Anderson is mentioned as is his assistant Nile Kinnick. Dr. Eddie Anderson was brought in to lead the Hawks after they won just two games in the 1937 and 38 seasons. An All-American during his playing days at Notre Dame, Anderson was their captain when they lost to Iowa in 1921, ending Knute Rockne’s 20-game winning streak. Iowa was five games into a 20-game winning streak of their own.
Iowa didn’t face the Irish again until 1939. Nile Kinnick, the 1939 Heisman Trophy winner, scored a touchdown, intercepted a pass, and made a touchdown-saving tackle as Iowa beat the Irish 7-6 in 1939 and ended their undefeated season. They shut out another undefeated Notre Dame squad 7-0 in 1940.
Anderson was selected to coach the College All-Star squad that faces the Green Bay Packers in 1940, which is the last last football game Kinnick plays in. The Brooklyn Dodgers select Kinnick in the second round of the 1940 NFL Draft, but he chooses to go back to Iowa to attend law school, then becomes a Naval aviator. Anderson serves in the Army’s Medical Corps during the war and returns to the Hawkeyes in 1946.
