Sports begins on page 13… The league’s top two quarterbacks faced each other on Sunday, with the Washington Redskins squeaking past the Brooklyn (football) Dodgers 3-0.
Pictured on page 15 is quarterback Clarence “Ace” Parker after intercepting a Sammy Baugh pass. One of his tacklers is Ki Aldrich, who is not only a first-rate center, but was considered one of the greatest linebackers in NFL history. More impressive than playing two ways, which was typical of the era, is that Ace Parker also played baseball for the Philadelphia Athletics. Between 1937 and 1938 he played 94 games and accomplished the rare feat of hitting a pinch-hit homerun in his first-ever at bat.
Also pictured is Washington receiver Wayne Millner, and all three players will be named to the College Football Hall of Fame (Millner and Parker are also enshrined in the NFL’s Hall of Fame) and all three will join the Navy… On July 28, 1937 Ace Parker got an RBI single off a young Cleveland right-hander named Bob Feller and belted a home run off Whit Wyatt. Wyatt pitched a spectacular Game 2 for the Dodgers in the 1941 World Series, and scored the Dodgers’ only run during today’s loss to the Yankees…
Page 15: Georgia’s Frankie Sinkwich, who fractured his jaw in the Bulldogs’ 34-6 win over the South Carolina Gamecocks, will be able to play the rest of the year. Doctors say the sophomore tailback will just need to wire his jaw and tape up his chin.
