Three crew members survivors of the American-owned steam merchant Sessa share the story of their sinking — by U-38, it turns out. Sessa belonged to the Danish until she was taken over by the United States and renamed Longtaker in August. Longtaker is the 35th — and final — vessel sunk by U-38, and the first by her new skipper, Korvettenkapitän Heinrich Shuch. U-38‘s first 34 sinkings were under the command of Kapitänleutnant Heinrich Liebe, one of the Kriegsmarine’s most successful U-boat skippers…

More details emerge regarding the lost B-18 bomber first reported yesterday (see pages two and seven)…Sports section is on page 17… Tucked away on page 20 is a brief mention of the St. Louis Cardinals buying the contract of an outfielder named Stanley Musial. Originally signed as a pitcher, the Cardinals shift him to the outfield in 1941. Before moving up to Rochester, “Stanley’s” 26 home runs with the Springfield Cardinals led the Western Association. The 20-year-old Donora, Pa. native will hit an impressive .426 in his 12 games with St. Louis before the season comes to a close.

Musial played baseball and basketball at high school, receiving a scholarship offer to play for University of Pittsburgh’s basketball team. But the St. Louis Cardinals signed him instead, not reporting the contract until after Donora’s basketball season had finished. One of his high school teammates was Buddy Griffey, the grandfather of future hall of famer Ken Griffey, Jr.
