Page four reports that former heavyweight boxing champion Max Schmeling has been killed fighting on Crete. German authorities are doubtful that the paratrooper is in fact dead… George Fielding Eliot column on lessons learned from the loss of the British battleship HMS Hood on page 11…

Sports section begins on page 13. Pictured on page 15 is the first game played at Washington’s Griffith Stadium under the lights. On the same page, former Chicago Bears fullback Bronko Nagurski is one of three former All-American football players now in professional wrestling. Although he was arguably one of the best players of all time, Nagurski left football for a more profitable career in the ring in 1937. Other ex-players are Colgate’s Leonard Macaluso and Gus Sonnenberg, who was first-team All-Pro for the NFL’s Detroit Panthers and the Providence Steam Roller in the 1920s. Still on 15, a preview of tomorrow’s 29th Indianapolis 500 race.
