Image of the day: Burn notice

A U.S. Navy McDonnell F4H-1 Phantom II of Fighter Squadron 74 (VF-74). The “Be-Devilers” transitioned from the F4D Skyray to Phantoms on 8 July 1961, becoming the first squadron to deploy Phantoms in the U.S. Navy.

This photo reminds me of my time on flight lines as an Air Force firefighter. Much of my time was spent on a headquarters base and we didn’t have much in the way of cool aircraft. But when Navy aviators saw us watching from behind the fire station as they taxied to the runway, they often treated us to a private air show — punching the afterburners, flying just above the runway, and then shoot straight up and out of sight. I suppose Air Force restrictions on outstanding takeoffs don’t have as much sway on transitioning Naval aircraft.
