We still Need Embryonic Stem Cells?
In what I would call a major medical breakthrough, scientists have turned human skin cells into embryonic stem cells. Once the process is perfected, human embryos may no longer be needed to produce stem cells.
University of Wisconsin-Madison biologist James Thomson said, “The induced cells do all the things embryonic stem cells do. It’s going to completely change the field.”
Sounds great, right? Well, not to the pro-abortion types.
Despite the fact that after years of research funded by mountains of taxpayer money, embryonic stem cells have yet to treat anything. Get this – the New York Times reported in 2001 that fetal brain tissue from a “blastocyst” (sounds better than aborted baby) was injected into Parkinson’s patients. A researcher in the study called the results “absolutely devastating.” The treatment made several of the patients “writhe and twist, jerk their heads, fling their arms about. . . . They chew constantly, their fingers go up and down, their wrists flex and distend. . . . It was tragic, catastrophic. . . . It’s a real nightmare. And we can’t selectively turn it off.” Sounds like a bad day even for a mad scientist.
Adult cells are not just being talked about, they are in use in the medical field. They are making money, so it pays to invest in even more research in them. Adult stem cells currently treat 73 different diseases. Amniotic cells – zero. If left entirely to the free market, the false hope of amniotic stem cells would have been left behind long ago. But liberal politicians want to pour more of your money into amniotic research. U.S. Representative Diana DeGette (D-CO) said in an interview with the Denver Post that she wants Congress and the President to butt out of research. That way, even more of your money can go towards funding something that doesn’t work.
Since Democrats tell us that everything they do is for the children, I would like one day for one of them to explain where “for the children” fits in when 1.3 million babies are aborted each year. The dirty little secret is that the left wants to keep funding amniotic stem cells regardless of the results. Without the promise of curing diseases looming in the future, abortion now has one less leg to stand on. Not good news for the abortion crowd.
